I hope you have had a great week, and my emails continue to both inspire and motivate you.
The Mountain Climber’s Mistake
A lesson in why successful minds often miss the basics when it comes to fitness.
Picture this: you’re standing at the base of Everest, watching climbers make their way up. They don’t just charge straight to the summit.
They go up to Camp One—then come back down. Push to Camp Two—then return. It’s a process: acclimatisation, preparation, progression.
Yet when it comes to our own fitness journeys, we often expect a straight shot to the top.
The Businessman’s Paradox
This week, I sat down with a chap who’d built and sold a hugely successful family business. Sharp as a tack with numbers.
“We always knew, probably just a week later, exactly what the business had done the week before.”
He tracked turnover, profit, projections—every Friday, without fail.
But here’s the kicker:
This same businessman is chasing a GB vest this October. Big goal. Clear motivation. But when I asked about his training zones?
Blank stare.
HRV? Never heard of it.
Post-session nutrition? “I just crack on.”
He wouldn’t run a business blind. But he’s running his body that way.
Real People. Real Results.
This contrast hit me harder because, just this weekend, I watched four of our athletes crush it:
✅ Rob, a solicitor juggling three calendars, smashed a marathon in brutal conditions—14th overall, 2nd in age group. Data-driven from day one.
✅ Sulli won the British National Pump Track Champs—on the wrong bike. Power data said he was ready.
✅ Alex took 20 minutes off his Half Ironman time. Same race, one year apart. Same athlete—smarter zones.
✅ Hazel and her team mate Denise qualified for the Hyrox World Champs—20 minutes ahead of her nearest competition, posting an incredible time in the process!
That’s not luck. That’s assessment over assumption.

…..Hazel and her race partner Denise crushing the competition and posting the 13th fastest time in the world EVER!
It’s All About The Metrics That Matter
If your fitness or body composition isn’t improving, stop looking at what you’re doing right.
Start asking what you’re missing.
You might be:
Training in the wrong heart rate zones
Fuelled improperly for your workouts
Overestimating intensity or under-recovering
Chasing trends that break down progress
Fasted training, for example? Useful in the right dose.
Overdo it, and you’ll lose muscle, not fat.
Know Your Summit. Track Your Route.
We’re all climbing a mountain: a 5K, an Ironman, a PB, or just feeling like an athlete again.
But the ones who summit?
They know their numbers. And what they actually mean.
📊 Key markers every athlete should track:
Resting heart rate trending downward
Lower HR for the same pace/power
Faster HR recovery between intervals
HRV steadily improving
Increased performance without increased effort
So, Are You Guessing or Assessing?
Before every meal, session, or skipped recovery day, ask yourself:
“Is this taking me towards my summit—or am I just hoping it might?”
Guessing keeps you wandering. Assessing gets you climbing.
