I try not to spend too much time “consuming” content on social media.
I still use it, don’t get me wrong, and have managed to stay fairly consistent in posting videos on there for the last couple of months.
(Don’t forget to follow me on Instagram or TikTok, if you’re not already.)
But I do my level best to avoid getting sucked into a ‘scroll hole’ where hours seem to pass in minutes.
Not just because it’s an obvious waste of time though.
I also want to avoid being drawn into pointless debates or arguments with the ‘trolls’ who’ll make the most audacious and boldest claims – despite having no qualifications or expertise to back them up.
“Don’t eat carbs.” “Only eat carbs.” “Don’t eat after 9pm.” “Only eat at night.”
Misinformation is so rife, it’s no surprise so many people feel so utterly bamboozled about what they should be doing to help achieve their health and fitness goals.
Then there’s the “hustle” crew.
Those who suggest all you need to do is “get up and do the work”.
And perhaps there’s a tiny bit of truth to what they’re saying…
After all, you’re not going to set a new marathon PB or improve your triathlon transition times by sitting on the sofa, bingeing Netflix, tearing into another bag of biscuits, 7 nights a week.
I had a friend comment on one of my Instagram posts recently:

It’s a challenge I know many of us face.
Oftentimes we know we could get up earlier and get out for a walk, or hop on the bike for a bit before starting our day.
Or we know we could make sure we’ve planned out our food, to help keep our nutrition on track, instead of reaching for the “convenience” food that stops our progress in its tracks.
I’ve never been a fan of the “just do the work” attitude of some trainers and coaches.
It fails to take into account the nuances of an individual’s circumstances.
Juggling busy family life, work stresses, and a dozen other commitments that all require energy.
That’s why my focus with coaching clients is centred around efficiency.
It’s not about training more, or making drastic, unsustainable changes that leave you feeling drained, stressed, or more prone to injury.
It’s about striking a delicate balance between doing enough of the right training to see rapid and consistent results, without having to give up the things that are important to you.
